(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) Text_TravelwithKids_white.jpgDo you have plans for a family vacation this summer? I was reminded last weekend talking to a friend with a new baby how challenging it can be the first time you travel with your baby. I think the crawling and toddler stage tends to be the most difficult. As babies, they sleep and can be comforted with a bottle and as they get older, there are many ways to entertain kids. We have been traveling with our kids since they were 3 months old and although it has not always been easy and I will always hate packing - we have had some fun both via plane and car going to Tahoe, Mammoth, Mexico, Hawaii, Colorado, New York, Boston, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada and throughout California. There have been times though when I thought I was crazy to think I could travel with babies... the 10 hours I spent stuck at the San Francisco airport alone with my 9 month old twins with no more diapers or formula should have caused me to take pause, or the trip to the East Coast for a reunion with our 3 year old twins and a newborn where I came down with a horrible fever and had to go the emergency room...and of course the list goes on. I would not change it for anything though. The memories are wonderful and our kids have become great travelers. They can sleep anywhere, adapt to any time zone and love new adventures. For those of you wondering when the right time to travel is, it is NOW! There is never a perfect time and your kids are never a perfect age. Just take plenty of supplies, get as many tips as you can from seasoned travelers and pack up the kids and go.

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) travelig_girl2.jpgPLANNING & PACKING... One key to a successful trip comes in the preparation and planning stages. If you are a list maker, now is the time to jot down the items you would like to take while keeping in mind the type of trip you are taking (beach vacation, visiting family and friends, etc), flying or driving, how long is the trip, etc. Just remember... plenty of diapers, change of clothes, activities and lots of snacks!!!  Our travel section page can help you locate local resources and features a variety of TRAVEL TIPS including how to pack.

Also check out our TRAVEL REVIEWS which may be helpful for getting destination ideas. Please share and SUBMIT your travel reviews once you've completed your trips!

AIRLINE TRAVEL... If you are flying, many airlines are now charging extra fees for checked bags so travelers are trying to pack more efficiently and stick to carry-ons when possible. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) publishes guidelines for travelers. Liquids and gels still have restrictions when they are packed in a carry-on. Each passenger is allowed one quart-sized zip-top clear bag with as many 3.4 ounce bottles (or smaller) of liquids or gels that fit into the one bag. Remember, your kids are passengers, too, so they can have their own carry-ons and their zip-top bag as well. Some changes have been made to the rules regarding flying with formula, breast milk and food so visit the TSA website for the latest information.

Maybe a STAYCATION is what you have planned this year. Staycations offer an affordable way to take time off and there is NO PACKING involved! The Santa Barbara area provides us so with many choices and places to explore.  For ideas, make sure to check out our Tourist/Locals Overview and the Family & Tourist Attractions pages.  Here are a few day trip ideas:  Nojoqui Falls -- Lake Casitas Recreation Area  --  The Ravine Waterpark in Paso Robles --  Los Angeles Zoo --  PCPA Theaterfest in Solvang

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) Beach_Sunblock.jpgSUNSCREEN TIPS... Regardless if you are staying in town or traveling out of town, don't forget to protect yourself from the sun! Kids are more vulnerable to sun damage and a few blistering sunburns in childhood can double a person's lifetime chances of developing serious forms of skin cancer. The best sunscreen is a hat and shirt. After that, protect kids with a sunscreen that's effective and safe. I know that when spray sunscreens first came out, I was thrilled and immediately thought I would switch our family to the spray-types for our sun protection. We noticed that we were all getting slightly burned even when heavily sprayed and we have now switched back to lotion-type sunscreen. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has released their 2010 sunscreen guide in which EWG researchers recommend only 39 out of of 500 beach and sport sunscreens on the market this season. EWG says many sunscreens do not adequately protect your skin from both UVA (which causes premature aging, skin cancer, and other skin damage) and UVB (which causes sunburn) rays. Plus, several products contain questionable chemicals. The easiest way to find sunscreens that are safe and effective is to use EWG's database, which has ratings on over 1,400 products from lotions and sprays to lip balms, moisturizers, and makeup with sun protection.

Family Travel
The days are getting longer, the weather warmer and spring fever has officially kicked in! Now is the time of year to put away the umbrellas and enjoy the great outdoors. With summer just around the corner, have you planned your family's vacation, yet?

Busy? Work demands piling? Kids running you around town like there is no tomorrow? We get it! Consider using a travel professional, trained to work within your budget and well-versed in family vacation options. We understand that Mom and Dad may want to simply relax, and we also understand that children want to be kept active. Why not award your family with "bragging rights" of the ultimate summer vacation. May it be a multi-generation travel, a family reunion or just your immediate family, let your vacation be rewarding: reconnect as a family unit, relax, rejuvenate, enjoy quality time, and most of all build lasting memories. Whether your ideal vacation is gazing out into the Caribbean Sea, witnessing more shades of blue than your child's Crayola box, or enjoy heart pumping activities like hiking, rock climbing or zip-lining...whatever your family desires, we can craft a trip that pleases everyone!

Consider a Cruise
(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) BoatX.jpgDon't let the thought of traveling with your children discourage you- consider taking a cruise. It's convenient, affordable, and with so many activities onboard, there's something for everyone to do, or if you choose, do nothing at all. A major focus of today's cruise suppliers is having activities and facilities for every age group. More than 50% of North American families live within driving distance of a cruise-ship port. And for those exotic destinations that seem so far away with costly airfares, you can now think twice, as many of our cruise partners are offering FREE or significantly reduced airfare. In addition, incredible discounts, on board credits and rock bottom rates (for additional passengers in a stateroom) make family cruising especially appealing. Some cruise lines offer specially designed family staterooms to accommodate adults with children, and many have youth oriented programs at sea with family dining options free of charge.  Continue Reading>

10 Tools for Surviving Family Vacations

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) Family_CarVacation2.jpgSubmitted by Don R. MacMannis, Ph.D.

Now that school’s winding down and everyone wants to play, Americans are going on vacation in unprecedented numbers. Having a flashlight and flares for a car trip is a great idea. So is a travel bag of games and CDs.

But what about a repair kit for family feelings? Or a road map to harmony? Even a dream vacation in an idyllic setting can become a nightmare if the kids are at each other’s throats. Here are some practical parenting tools to help bring out the best in everybody:

1.  Remember the big picture. A family vacation can be a perfect opportunity to create fun and lasting memories. Consider making learning, loving and living in the moment your highest priority, rather than getting to a particular destination.

2.  Share appreciations and praise. Families do best when everybody (including adults) feels appreciated. Notice the good things and praise your kids, aiming for at least a 5:1 ratio of positive to negative statements.

3.  Don’t relax the rules and routines too much. Younger children can’t “sleep in,” so later or irregular bedtimes can create sleep deprivation and irritability. Kids thrive when parents provide lots of love and warmth, but also firmness and structure.

4.  Give lots of time to blow off steam. Being away can be exciting but also stressful. Join in and help your children express themselves physically and emotionally through exercise and activities.

5.  Provide practice at making decisions. If done in moderation, handing over some decisions to the kids is a terrific way for them to learn planning and thinking skills. Going somewhere new puts everybody on an exciting, equal footing.

6.  Have family meetings. This is an ideal way to air feelings, make group decisions and help everyone feel respected for their preferences. Don’t forget that you’re all in the same boat. When tensions flare, it’s time to attend. If siblings aren’t getting along, a good “repair kit” is to have them work things out by sitting face to face, listening to and acknowledging each other’s feelings.

7.  Honor individual differences. Travel often highlights some differences between family members: preferences around food, activities, how much time to be active vs. relaxing, etc. It’s a fabulous time to learn to compromise and take turns leading and following. Some kids get homesick and may act younger and need more loving attention.

8.  Be prepared for idle times. In addition to the travel bag of games and CDs, have some games to use when you’re waiting or standing on lines (e.g., guessing which hand a coin is in). It’s also fun to let the kids safely scout out new places and come back to give you a report.

9.  Allow some down time.  Families are often not accustomed to being together all the time. Allow some ebbs and flows of being together and apart, and of quiet and more active times.

10.  Listen to your own needs.  Create time to be apart from the children and nurture yourself and your adult relationships. It’s a win-win situation. One of the greatest gifts you can offer your children is your own sense of happiness and well-being.

Don R. MacMannis, Ph.D. has been a psychologist specializing in the treatment of children and families for the past thirty years. He is also music director and songwriter for the hit PBS series, Jay Jay the Jet Plane. His series of song CDs and activity books, Ready to Rock Kids, won the 2007 Best Children's Vacation Product award. This product can be found at DrMacMusic.com
