TEACHER APPRECIATION... Our school-age children spend 6-7 hours per day, 5 days a week, 9 months a year with their teachers so it seems important to figure out a way to show them how thankful we are of all that they do to help shape and prepare our children for the future. Teachers are responsible for educating 20 or more kids with varying personalities and learning styles on a daily basis, a task that needs to be applauded.

"I have spent many hours volunteering in classrooms and chaperoning field trips and find that I usually leave absolutely exhausted and whole-heartedly appreciative of the teacher's efforts. Over the years I have participated in and helped organize different events for teacher appreciation week. We have coordinated gift card purchases, made lunches and desserts and had children write special notes. This year our school PTA has come together and coordinated parents to take lunch duty for the teachers so that, as a group, the teachers can enjoy a homemade lunch that we prepare for them and have a day off of lunch duty. The response from our school staff has been very positive and we are excited to show them how we appreciate all that they do. Additionally, we will ask our kids to write a special note of thanks where they include a memory they have of this school year. No matter what you or your school decides to do for teacher appreciation week, take the time to tell your teacher thanks."

TEACHER NOMINEES... Next week we celebrate teachers and we are excited to be honoring the following that were nominated by local students and parents... Alice Robles, Amalie Kornell, Debra Hoffmann, Jeanie DeTomaso, Jennifer Gonzalez, Katie Autry, Kitty Jones, Lacey McCrigler, Laura Calene, Melanie Jacobs & Rob Stephenson, Ms. Malvinni, Pam McCabe, Teacher Terese, and Teacher Nicole.   Long-time Teacher Shares Ideas

Submitted by Beth Kanne Casselman, MEd, LMFT

As a teacher of twenty-plus years, a mother of two young children (one about to begin kindergarten) and a psychotherapist working with families--many including children with school-related issues-I can attest to the fact that Teacher Appreciation is a celebration truly appreciated by teachers.

Some parents have asked what they can do to best express their appreciation of their children's teachers, and from personal experience, I can make the following suggestions:

TASTY EDIBLES: Like most creatures, teachers enjoy eating. And though during the school day most of our eating is done on the fly, it's awfully nice when we encounter a buffet of treats awaiting us in the teachers' lounge. While we're usually racing back to our classrooms to grade papers, prepare for the next science lesson, or to help a student cope with a special challenge we're snacking and these edible signs of appreciation do every bit as much to fill our hearts as our tummies.

NOTES: Personal notes of appreciation are like manna to teachers. Frankly, in this climate of test outcomes and API scores, the notes teachers receive are more often filled with complaints than praises. And while we definitely want to be informed when children have problems, it's awfully nice when we hear that we're doing something right. Whether the notes are written by children or their parents, they go a long way towards brightening our day. I began keeping a file of such letters 17 years ago, and, on particularly difficult days, a quick read through the file is a tonic for flagging spirits.

The letters that touch me most are those that are specific rather than general. If your child is the one writing the letter, you might encourage him or her to write about an especially enjoyable classroom project, a particularly memorable learning experience, or an interaction with the teacher that has made a vivid impression. And if it's you, the parent, writing the letter, instead of the generic: We appreciate all that you do for Jimmy or Susie. It's been such a great year. Try instead to emphasize the teacher's special contribution to your child's school experience and growth as an individual.

GIFTS: Gifts aren't something that teachers expect, but if it's within your means or you can collaborate with other parents, you might want to give an outstanding teacher a special token of your appreciation. Who wouldn't welcome a gift certificate for a day at a spa, a facial or manicure, or dinner at a nice restaurant - things teachers don't normally indulge in because of time or expense. Or, if you happen to know a teacher's hobbies-such as yoga, hiking, or travel-you might want to consider a gift related to their specific interest. Be sure to choose something the teacher will use personally. Gift certificates to such places as Border's, Chaucer's, and Target usually wind up being spent on books or supplies for the classroom or on underwear for their own children.

Your child's teacher probably already has a desk laden with mugs, pots of African violets, and similar novelties-and doesn't need more. But you can show your thoughtfulness with something more personal such as stationery or post-its notes or a rubber stamp emblazoned with the teacher's name.(Business Logos) BethKannelarge09.jpg

While hardworking, dedicated teachers get their greatest reward helping youngsters develop, there's no denying the pleasure of having their work recognized and valued. Teacher Appreciation days commemorate the important teacher-student-parent connection-a relationship we can all enjoy and celebrate.

  Teacher Nominees

Alice Robles

Mrs. Robles manages a well-oiled machine with routines and procedures the students can count on. The students can also count on a thoughtful, caring, well-organized teacher that brings out the best in them.  Good character is emphasized; particularly personal responsibility. It is wonderful to witness my third-grader flourish in her class! Mrs. Robles also spends two lunch breaks each week coaching the track team with Mrs. Forssell. - Irene

Amalie Kornell

Amalie is an amazing teacher!  She is my daughter's teacher at The Learningden Preschool and she is always happy, friendly, and prepared for class. She truly makes all of the kids in her class feel respected and appreciated. We look forward to another great year and want other to know what an exceptional job she does. My daughter has gotten so much out of her class this year. - Kelly

Debra Hoffmann

Teacher Debra goes out of her way on a daily basis to not only check in with the child but also to check in with the parent to see how things are going. She makes concrete plans tailored to each student, to work with the parent in fostering I love for learning. When things are tough for me, she knows what I need, because she understands my child as an individual. Finally, she welcomes me with a hug whenever she can. - Kathy McElroy

Debra is an awesome teacher at Hope 4 Kids Preschool. She meets the kids every morning with a hug and a smile and is always willing to get down and meet her students eye to eye. She is also enthusiastic about learning and is ready to approach each child in a way that allows him or her to excel in their learning environment. Hana just said she especially likes the way "Teacher Debra talks to me." Thanks teacher Debra! - Tamra

Jeanie DeTomaso

We were nervous to send our kindergartner off to school last September. But we quickly found out that he was in the best hands we could have hoped for. Jeanie sees the absolute best in every child! She LOVES all her kids and lets them know she believes in them. I've never seen so much energy and positivity coming from one person working with high-energy kids all day. Zaiden adores Jeanie and we feel blessed to have her in our lives.

Jennifer Gonzalez

Kindness, energy, patience, caring, creativity, flexibility, planning, giving, a positive attitude, and a smile. Mrs. Gonzalez, Kindergarten teacher at The Howard School, truly embodies a great teacher. She manages to reach each child, each day, for each lesson. She truly engages students, and uses her mastery of teaching and creativity to weave in fun surprises, from the make-believe "Zero The Hero" who brings fun and challenging math problems, to leprechauns who left footprints and moved things, to a whole immersion in the impressionist artists including books and hands-on art projects. I am sure my daughter will never forget Mrs. Gonzalez. - Beth Bailey

Katie Autry

Teacher Katie is the most energetic, enthusiastic and caring teacher I know. She welcomes my children with a big smile and warm welcome. She knows my child well enough to know when to give her a hug and extra attention, when to encourage and push her to do better, and gives her praise for a job well done. My daughter who was once shy and reserved, is now outgoing, social, and happy at school. She has flourished under the tender care of this amazing teacher. - Kathleen McElroy

Kitty Jones

Mrs. Jones has the fabulous combination of creating fun and engaging activities, stretching the kids' imaginations, and gaining their respect in the classroom. She puts on plays in her classroom and has 2nd graders memorizing parts, giving them confidence in reading and putting together all aspects of the performance (scenery, prop changes, etc.) Her communication with parents is the best I've seen - each week, a short note about how my son did, academically and behaviorally. Also, when issues arise, she is quick to address them with him and with me, and in a gentle and respectful way. Her lessons and the way she runs her classroom are all meaningful, purposeful, and in the kids' best interest. - Melanie Pearlman

Lacey McCrigler

I am so thankful that my third grader has had such an exceptional year at Coastline Christian Academy. Thanks to Miss McCrigler, he has learned first hand what it meant to live as a colonist, explored different countries, and construct a Native American dwelling. He has learned a lot about our community and how he can serve others through field trips and special projects, and he has gained a ton of self confidence because of her positive discipline and encouragement. We love you Lacey! - Staci Patterson

Lacey is the epitome of a selfless teacher. She is so encouraging and strives for each of her 3rd graders to reach their full potential. She willingly and lovingly stays after school to individually tutor her kids that may have fallen behind, she even drives them home afterwards! She recently volunteered to house and pet sit for us while we were away for the weekend. She cared for 3 dogs, 6 baby chicks, fish and a kitty. While gone, our dog had 12 puppies! She stayed up all through the night to be with her, never having "delivered" pups before. She is amazing and never complains about anything! - Kathy Shields

Laura Calene

Mrs. Calene is so sweet and her patience seems to be limitless.  She uses simple things to reinforce learning and uses her Italian heritage as an educational tool.  My son has learned words in Italian and has two Italian pen pals!  At the morning recess, this generous teacher offers snack to any of her students who want it.  Her generous nature and positive attitude are a good influence on her students. - Irene Milton

Melanie Jacobs & Rob Stephenson

Melanie and Rob are the Dynamic Duo of Purple Door at Montessori Center School. They have patience, knowledge and caring beyond what is expected of a classroom teacher! We couldn't be happier that our daughter is in thier class! Thanks Mel and Rob! - Laura Baker

Ms. Malvinni

I think my teacher is great because she is real nice, she does a lot of cool things like have prizes for us and we do raffles and goals that we earn like no homework for a Wednesday! She also is amazing, very kind and funny. She is a GREAT teacher! - Kalissa Flint

Teacher Nicole

Nicole provides such a warm and welcoming environment for my 8 month old. He has had such great experiences in fun and learning at Hope 4 Kids Infant/Toddler Center. - Heather Ross

Pam McCabe

With the sweet smile and firm touch of a seasoned kindergarten teacher, Mrs. McCabe brings out the best from each of her students. They love her many creative projects, listen raptly to her stories, bask in her attentiveness and work hard to reach her high standards. We are so grateful to have her! - Yael Brennan

Teacher Terese

Teacher Terese is such an amazing, bubbly, uplifting teacher. Before Sam started Hope4Kids Preschool, she came all the way to our house in Lompoc to meet Sam to make him feel welcome on his first day of school. Ever since, she has always had a smile, great energy, and real dedication for her job. We are so blessed to have her in Samuel's life. - Cortney Lorca
  Parent Concern: Marijuana Dispenseraries

(Site Photos) Studentphoto.jpgSubmitted by Mari Mender, Local Mom & Nurse

Medical Marijuana was decriminalized by Prop. 215 in 1996. It was designed to protect a specific class of people - the seriously and terminally ill. It does not apply to recreational users of marijuana who simply feel they get some "medical" benefit.

On May 11th our city council votes on the issue. Certain members of council want to allow storefront entrepreneurs to sell marijuana for recreational use for profit. These are marijuana dispensaries. It is a contentious issue and has far reaching consequences for our city, county and state. Santa Barbara City Council has allowed Marijuana Dispensaries to operate illegally. The city has failed at enforcing the law and control of outright drug trafficking, this puts our community at risk. Especially our youth.

There is a major rally on May 11 in front of city hall before council session- join our Facebook Group called FIGHT BACK SANTA BARBARA to stay informed.

People opposed to this ordinance need to be there: parents, kids, neighborhoods, PTAs, educators, health care professionals anyone and everyone that agrees, Compassionate use cooperatives yes- Retail business model NO! READ MORE >>
