PETS... We are about to take the plunge and buy a dog... something we have been putting off for many years. I loved having pets as a child so as a parent I wrestled with our kids being able to have that experience versus my own selfish reasons of not wanting one more thing to take care of. We started with bunnies two years ago that we adopted from BUNS. The experience has been great and our kids have demonstrated that they can be responsible for the bunnies' care. (Site Photos) Pet_Whit_Dog.jpgMy kids adore animals and everything comes to a complete halt anytime we pass by a dog. They started a dog walking business a year ago and now they are ready to have their own. We are starting our search which is an overwhelming task. We know many of you are experts. We invite you to share your favorite dog breed to assist us in our research or share a tip on caring for pets  (you could win a one year membership to the SB Museum of Natural History) >>

We live in a very pet friendly community. We have parks and beaches that welcome dogs. We have pet stores and great dog daycare facilities. My excuse for not gettng a dog has always been that my husband has allergies. I cannot even use that one anymore because there are now hypoallergenic dogs. (These dogs do produce dander but the amount is so small that very few people experience allergy symptoms.) There are so many positive things about having a pet and whether it is a dog, cat, fish, or reptile. I think it is important to find what will fit best with your families lifestyle. There are also great opportunities at some of our shelters for kids to learn about taking care of animals and for them to volunteer with animals.

NEW STORE IN TOWN... Speaking of animals, have you heard about Happy Little Hippo? It is a new children's resale boutique located on De La Vina St.  Be sure to check it out and take advantage of their Parent Perk offer >>

IN MEMORY OF... Our community suffered a loss this past weekend with the tragic death of local California Highway Patrol Officer Jarrod Martinez.  A memorial service is scheduled today from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Santa Barbara Courthouse Sunken Gardens.  Our hearts go out to Jarrod's family members during this difficult time.

Coping with the Loss of a Pet

~Submitted by SB Humane Society

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) Pet_Bowl.jpgEvery relationship between a person and his or her pet is unique. This relationship has provided you with companionship, acceptance, emotional support and unconditional love. Because our beloved pets are considered members of the family, experiencing the loss of a pet can be just as hard to cope with as the loss of a close human friend or relative. Therefore, it is natural to feel overwhelmed by the intense emotions you experience.

Because of this special bond between humans and animals, it is also natural to grieve when your pet dies. Understanding how you grieve will help you survive the loss and maintain your ability to continue experiencing meaningful relationships in your life. Children especially may need encouragement in order to express their feelings and work through their grief.

Usually the process begins with denial, because the loss seems too great to bear; we feel that never seeing our pet again cannot possibly be true. Anger directed at anyone involved with your pet, or feelings of guilt, may follow. Whatever your response, you may worry that it is inappropriate. After you pass through this stage of anger, and possibly guilt as well, it is natural to feel depressed and lonely for a period of time. As you establish new routines and habits and you find yourself enjoying thoughts, stories, and photos of your pet, you begin to accept the reality of your loss.

These are the widely recognized stages of grief through which many people will pass. The grief process can last days or even years, depending on the individual. Stages may last for a long or short period of time. Some stages may be experienced repeatedly and some may overlap each other. It is important to realize that grieving is not a sign of weakness, nor is seeking help with the process. Because the grieving process is an intense emotional time, it is important to get whatever help you need from family, friends, a professional counselor, or a support group.

New Campaign "Walk and Roll" Launches in Schools

~Submitted by the Community Environmental Council

(Business Logos) walkroll.jpgGetting to school healthy, happy and green...

Walk and Roll is a campaign to choose alternative transportation to help reduce congestion, improve health, and help the environment. www.walk-roll.org provides information on carpooling, walking, biking and busing to school.

It's easy to find a neighbor to share carpool duties with and save lots of time and gas while reducing congestion! Walking and biking are healthy, active modes of transportation and www.walk-roll.org provides maps, advice, and other resources on walking and biking. Or have MTD take your kids to school for you with the school booster buses.

Let's all make a commitment to try alternative transportation at least once per week. If we all formed a carpool, put our kids on the bus, or encouraged them to walk or bike to school, think about the reduction in congestion and the health and environmental benefits our community would experience!
