Isla Vista Halloween Forum for Parents of High Schoolers
10/27/2009 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm San Marcos High School Auditorium

A forum providing information on Halloween in Isla Vista, with speakers from several of the county agencies that respond to and help contain the annual street party. Intends to educate parents about the unique and inordinate dangers that exist for high school students partying in Isla Vista during Halloween.

As you may or may not know, the massive party that happens in IV over Halloween is considered a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) by the County of Santa Barbara. This means that the county implements a coordinated response involving emergency medical services, law enforcement, and local hospitals, in order to deal with the inordinately large number of injuries and hospitalizations that occur during Halloween night as a result of the partying in IV. Dr. Doohan has been involved with the emergency medical response in IV for a number of years, working at the Recovery Zone and Medical First Aid Station on the Grounds of St. Athanasius Church in Isla Vista.

There are several goals that we hope to achieve through the Isla Vista Halloween forum. We want to discourage parents from allowing their students to attend the party in Isla Vista by discussing the unique problems and dangers that the Halloween party poses for high school students. More importantly, we want to provide parents with information on the Halloween party in IV that can be passed on to their high school students. In the event that a high school student ends up in Isla Vista on Halloween, we want to help that students successfully manage the risks and navigate the dangers of IV Halloween. This is best done by giving high school students good information that will help them make informed decisions. Finally, we also want to stimulate discussion between parents and high school students about under-aged drinking and the many headaches that it can cause, no pun intended. We think it is especially important to have such discussions before Halloween, due to the unrestricted access to alcohol in IV during Halloween.
